In 1982, a small group of music teachers met at the home of Sue Bender in Reston, VA.  They decided to form a new music teachers' group called Fairfax West Music Fellowship.  The group was established to have events for students that were unjudged and thus could be open to all members who wanted their students to have experience performing without having an evaluation.  Another benefit of forming the group was being able to use the new Reston Community Center's auditorium for recitals at reduced rates.

The group began meeting monthly at members' homes and providing programs for members to grow as musicians and educators.  In 1993, after much fundraising, the group purchased a manual Franco-Flemish harpsichord for use by members and non-profit organizations for instructional purposes and performances.

In addition to providing solo performance opportunities for students, the group began sponsoring ensemble events such as a Concerto Concert and the Piano Ensemble Festival, which was a tradition for more than 30 years.

As development in Fairfax County grew and began to expand farther west, teachers from neighboring Loudoun County joined Fairfax West Music Fellowship, and in 2001, it was decided that the group would change its name to Fairfax-Loudoun Music Fellowship.
